The Republic of Zambia’s seventh President, Hakainde Hichilema and Vice President Mutale Nalumango were officially sworn into office today, 1 September 2026, at the National Heroes Stadium, Lusaka, marking the beginning of their second term to lead Zambia until 2031.
The inauguration ceremony was witnessed by thousands of Zambians and attended by five Heads of State, including Presidents Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe, Duma Boko of Botswana, Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania, and Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah of Namibia.
China was represented at Vice-Presidential level, while the United States, UAE, Rwanda, Malawi and Eswatini also sent high-ranking delegations.
President Hichilema took the Oath of Office before Chief Justice Mumba Malila, accompanied by First Lady, Mutinta Hichilema. Vice President Nalumango was also sworn in. The ceremony featured a presidential guard of honour, the national anthem, a fly-past, and a 21-gun salute.
In his speech, President Hichilema promised to serve the country with humility, fairness and to accelerate national development in all sectors.
He further outlined key achievements from the 2021-2026 term, including the continued strengthening of the education sector. He cited that thousands of children, including teenage mothers who had dropped out, returned to school under the free education policy.
Vice President Mutale Nalumango thanked President Hichilema for entrusting her with the role of Vice President in the second term.
In her speech, Nalumango said that the government recognizes the renewed term as a mandate to continue serving the country. “This is a sacred responsibility that requires humility, commitment and determination. This mandate belongs to the people.”
In addition, she urged citizens to unite around creating opportunities for young people and strengthen the economy.
